My pal Robert Hernandez is a huge Horror fan and he’s been helping yours truly keep the Vault’s Facebook page alive for the past few years while I transitioned into a new job, in a new State, in a new town, and continue to struggle with this parenting thing. Without much expendable income, or vacation time, I must now live vicariously through Rob as he visits horror conventions and rub elbows with various celebrity guests.
And now he has done me another solid, by taking the time to set up an interview with legendary Director Chuck Russell (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS, THE BLOB, THE MASK, et al.) about his latest directorial effort, WITCHBOARD. This remake of the Kevin Tenney classic received a limited theatrical release just a few weeks back, and has yet to make it’s Blu-ray and digital debut. But it’s sure to find an audience if it’s as good as Robert says it is.
Here’s his non-spoilery thoughts on the film:
I was thoroughly impressed with WITCHBOARD – while comparisons to the 1987 film can’t be helped, I believe this reimagining stands on its own and is a marked improvement over the original, carving out its own identity rather than feeling like a retread. The film takes a fresh spin on the story, starting with the discovery of a pendulum board by Emily (Madison Iseman) that quickly becomes a deadly obsession.
One of WITCHBOARD’s strongest aspects is its effective use of practical effects, expertly enhanced by subtle touches of CGI. Charlie Tahan shines as Richie, bringing a memorable charm to the film, while David La Haye delivers intense performances as the bishop in the film’s expository flashbacks. Personally, my only criticism is that Richie could’ve used more screen time. Overall, WITCHBOARD is a wild ride that’s definitely a worthwhile watch for horror fans.
Hopefully this film marks Director Chuck Russell permanent return to the horror genre!
Anyway, without further ado gang, here’s Robert’s interview with Chuck! Enjoy!
